Cecil Clarence Richards
Night and Day, 1962
Bronze
Russell Building, placed here in 1967

Image

“The sculpture is symbolic of man’s imagination floating off or reaching into the realm of cosmic space.  To portray this I chose as the subject two floating figures — significant of “Day” just going to rest — represented by the male, and “Night” crouching over, in the figure of the female.  thus it portrays the twilight hour when day is ending and night slowly begins.  To support the figures, I have used tree design — symbolic of the earth.  The texture of the bronze is free and loose. I have an “old world” opinion of this piece. How the man is reclined on a sharp, jagged uncomfortable base, and how the woman lays atop him, shows to me the purpose of a man’s design is to make the world a more bareable place for the woman.

I love how the figures represent day and night and that it looks so romantic. It shows that there is an intimacy so deep and a never ending connection between day and night. It is truly amazing.

A very graceful statement sculpture. Really adds interest and variation to the building.

This sculpture appears very crude, the female’s facial features do not appear very feminine. The sculpture gives off a retractive vibe based on male’s posture towards woman.

When I first saw it, i couldn’t understand what it was of course. But when I found out it’s about a male and female, couple or not, I always get personal cause it automatically makes me think of my parents. I wish my dad would stop fighting with my mom night and day. But, 10/10!! I like the sculpture. I honestly want it for my future house. I think the sculpture is sexy.
    (Qr code assignment though) 😊
